Green flashing light on 281077

My green light is flashing on a Thermor 281077. I understand this is a battery fault but you have to buy the complete thermostat. What do the batteries actually do?

  The battery provides ACI protection during the HP.

  Thank you for the reply. Not quire sure what that means though?

  So now my green light is flashing, is it imperative that the thermostat is changed as they are around a third of the price of a new boiler?

  I comfirm the meaning of the green light. If red ligh flashes once every 3 seconds baterry problem therefore no more ACI protection. If red light flashes 3 times every 3 seconds probe problem. In any case the parts do not come apart, you have to change the complete thermostat assembly
